NGO COALITION IN SUPPORT OF THE CREATION OF A SPECIAL MECHANISM ON EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW
We support the creation by the United Nations of a Special Mechanism on equality before the law, to facilitate implementation of the commitment made by governments in the Beijing Platform for Action in 1995 to “revoke any remaining laws that discriminate on the basis of sex and remove gender bias in the administration of justice.” Despite the target date of 2005 agreed in the Beijing + 5 review process for implementation of this commitment, explicitly discriminatory laws remain in force around the world. We believe such a dedicated UN Special Mechanism would help achieve the fundamental goal of legal equality between women and men, which is critical to the realization of actual equality between women and men, a cornerstone of the Beijing Platform for Action.
