Words and Deeds: Holding Governments Accountable in the Beijing+10 Review Process

The tenth anniversary of the landmark United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women (also called the Beijing Conference since it took place in Beijing in 1995) is scheduled to take place at the United Nations in New York from February 28-March 11, 2005. The tenth year review process (called Beijing + 10) is a significant event for the international women's movement and for women's rights worldwide.

At the Beijing Conference in 1995, delegates from 189 countries adopted a Declaration reaffirming their fundamental commitment to “the equal rights and inherent human dignity of women and men.” They also adopted the Beijing Platform for Action in which they pledged to “revoke any remaining laws that discriminate on the basis of sex.” In 2000, they agreed to do so “as soon as possible, preferably by 2005…”

Equality Now is in the midst of an intensive campaign calling on governments to fulfill their pledge to repeal discriminatory laws by the agreed target date of 2005.

Campaign materials include:
1. Press advisory, 24 February 2005
2. Press summary of Equality Now campaign to end discriminatory laws
3. Interactive map of discriminatory laws around the world
4. Synopsis of all targeted laws
5. Equality Now’s B+10 report: Words and Deeds: Holding Governments Accountable in the Beijing+10 Review Process (PDF, 448K)
6. Equality Now campaign calling for the creation of United Nations Special Rapporteur on laws that discriminate against women
