Wife Obedience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>When young girls are forced to marry, they face potentially lifelong harmful consequences. They are essentially subject to state-sanctioned rape and are at risk of increased domestic violence, forced pregnancy, and negative health consequences while being denied education and economic opportunity.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Laws prohibiting marriage under the age of 18 for both girls and boys<\/strong>, without any exceptions, are needed to\u00a0make explicit the States\u2019, and societies\u2019 understanding that young people need time to understand their independent circumstances before entering into a lifelong contract that will affect many aspects of their lives.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Article 3 of Cuba\u2019s Family Code provides that girls may be married off as young as 14 years old, while requiring a boy to be at least 16 years old.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:quote --><\/p>\n<p>Article 3.\u00a0<em>Men and women have authority to make their marriage official when they are over 18 years old. Therefore, those that are younger than 18 years old do not have authority to make their marriage official. Notwithstanding what was just stated, exceptionally there are justified reasons so that those under 18 years old have authority to make their\u00a0<strong>marriage<\/strong>\u00a0official,\u00a0<strong>as long as the female is at least 14 years old and the male 16 years old<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:quote --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Laws prohibiting marriage under the age of 18 for both girls and boys<\/strong>, without any exceptions, are needed to\u00a0make explicit the States\u2019, and societies\u2019 understanding that young people need time to understand their independent circumstances before entering into a lifelong contract that will affect many aspects of their lives.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:quote --><\/p>\n<p>Cuba\u2019s new Constitution came into force in 2019.
