Since the March 2016 launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/equalitynow.org\/resource\/the-state-were-in-ending-sexism-in-nationality-laws\/\">The State We\u2019re In: Ending Sexism in Nationality Laws<\/a> alone, four countries we highlighted &#8212; Guinea, Lesotho, Nauru, and the Solomon Islands &#8212; have achieved full legal equality in nationality rights, and another eight have achieved important reforms or taken important steps towards reform. The Annex below has now been updated.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Benin<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/sgg.gouv.bj\/doc\/loi-2022-32\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reformed <\/a>its nationality law at the end of December 2022, so there is now complete <a href=\"https:\/\/ortb.bj\/a-la-une\/benin-le-code-de-la-nationalite-revise-pour-plus-degalite-homme-femme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">equality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>At the end of July 2022, <strong>Liberia<\/strong> passed into law an <a href=\"https:\/\/thenewdawnliberia.com\/lawmakers-amend-alien-and-nationality-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Act to amend and or nullify certain provisions of the Alien and Nationality Law<\/a>, ensuring women and men\u2019s equal right to confer nationality on their children.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>In November 2023, <strong>Iran<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fa.shafaqna.com\/news\/1479341\/%D9%84%D8%BA%D9%88-%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%A7%D8%B9%D8%B7%D8%A7%DB%8C-%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%B9%DB%8C%D8%AA-%D8%A8%D9%87-%D9%81%D8%B1%D8%B2%D9%86%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%86-%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%AF\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repealed its 2019 amendment<\/a>\u00a0to the Law on Determining the Nationality of Children Born from a Marriage of Iranian Women and Foreign Men, upon approval of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiandefencereview.com\/spotlights\/browsing-the-planning-of-the-national-organization-for-the-residence-of-immigrants-in-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Residency Organization Plan<\/a>. Although the amendment\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/middle_east\/iran-women-refugees-rights-citizenship\/2020\/12\/24\/0b5f74b0-445d-11eb-ac2a-3ac0f2b8ceeb_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">did not create full equality<\/a>\u00a0between men and women &#8212; children born to non-Iranian fathers were still required to apply for nationality and pass a security check, whereas children born to Iranian men obtain citizenship automatically at birth &#8212; it was a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/iran-islamic-republic\/unhcr-welcomes-iran-s-new-nationality-law-addressing-statelessness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">significant step in the right direction<\/a>. Without the amendment, children born to non-Iranian fathers within Iran are now only granted citizenship once they reach the age of 18 and have lived in the country for more than a year, and children born to non-Iranian fathers outside of Iran\u00a0<em>may<\/em>\u00a0be granted citizenship once they reach the age of 18 and have lived in the country for more than five years.<\/p>\n<p><!--
