Mumbi Mugo

Ms. Mumbi Mugo is a Gender Specialist and human rights lawyer with 10 years’ experience advancing gender equality and women’s rights across Africa. Her work spans programme management, policy advocacy, and legal empowerment, grounded in a strong commitment to gender justice and social transformation. She has designed and led programmes across diverse sectors, including rural agriculture, the extractives industry, electoral processes, and land governance, while consistently centering the rights of women and marginalized communities.

Mumbi is part of the Legal Equality Programme at Equality Now, where she supports efforts to promote the ratification and effective implementation of the Maputo Protocol, using legal frameworks to address discriminatory laws and secure justice for women and girls. She has played a pivotal role in regional advocacy to promote the ratification and domestication of the Protocol to secure the rights of women and girls including maternal health and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and bodily autonomy. 

Her approach is deeply intersectional, recognizing how gender intersects with issues such as climate change, conflict, poverty, and systemic inequality. She has contributed to efforts that position women as critical actors in climate resilience, conflict, land governance, and sustainable development. Mumbi brings a feminist, people-centred lens to all her work. She is an experienced communicator and strategist, with proven strengths in movement building, research, policy influencing, and programme delivery. Her passion lies in translating legal standards into meaningful change at the community level and ensuring that no woman is left behind in the pursuit of justice and equality.

Beyond her professional work, Mumbi is a passionate educator and mentor, dedicating time to empower young women and girls in her community. She leads several initiatives focused on advancing menstrual justice in her rural community and serves on the boards of local secondary schools, where she advocates for improved access to quality education. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” Mumbi encourages personal responsibility and action in her advocacy and daily life.
