Officer, Advocacy – LAC

Latin America and the Caribbean

Sofia joined Equality Now in 2022, and is currently Officer, Advocacy – LAC.

Sofia’s career began at the age of 14 as a volunteer in literacy processes for poor girls and adolescents in remote areas. She also volunteered for over five years at Fundación León, where she accompanied women victims of trafficking to create businesses based on the social economy.

Sofía later became an activist at the National University of Tucumán, where she was a student counselor and presented projects to improve courses for students and working mothers. She implemented a registration change project for transgender people and a protocol against gender violence in education.

Sofía studied Social Work at the National University of Tucumán, where she wrote her thesis on child marriage, and is currently a professor of social work, being the youngest teacher at the university. She also has numerous academic specializations in gender and diversity, community feminism, integral sexual education, mental health, etc.

She was part of the adolescent and youth health council of the Ministry of Health of Argentina CONSAJU. In that framework, she made a diagnosis of the adolescent and youth health situation after the pandemic, where she focused on issues related to mental health.

Five years ago, she decided to begin researching the topic of child marriage and early cohabitation in girls and adolescents and is currently working on her research thesis.

Due to her commitment to the issue, she founded the organization Jovenas Latidas, a regional NGO of young women based in more than 7 countries in LAC, from where they promote actions to prevent child marriages and unions and work with girls and adolescents.

Based in Tucuman, Argentina, Sofia is available for interviews in English and Spanish.

Outside of work, Sofia enjoys poetry and music, as well as spending time with her beloved dogs, Margarita, Eva and Orly.
