Latin America and the Caribbean

Sandra Ramirez has been Equality Now’s Legal and Advocacy Advisor, Latin America and the Caribbean since August 2023, based in Colombia. She is an International Human Rights Lawyer with an LL.M. in International and Comparative Law, specializing in Human Rights from The George Washington University Law School. Sandra has a diverse background working in renowned organizations, including UNICEF Colombia, Women’s Link Worldwide (WLW), the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Organization of American States (OAS), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), RedR UK, and the Colombia Protection of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) Task Force. In these roles, she conducted research, provided legal advisory services, and designed and facilitated training programs focused on addressing sexual violence against girls, adolescents, and women. She has worked with various groups, including women with disabilities, adolescents, young people, indigenous and Afro-descent communities, and individuals affected by the internal armed conflict and mixed migratory influx from Venezuela, particularly in regions with a high risk of sexual violence.

Sandra also represented survivors of violence against women in national courts as part of a comprehensive multisectoral program addressing health, psychosocial support, and access to justice. Recently, she contributed to vital research and analysis at the intersection of climate change, human rights, and international law in her support of the Special Rapporteurship on Economic, Social, Cultural, and Environmental Rights at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States (OAS). At Equality Now, Sandra plays an integral role in supporting projects within the Ending Sexual Violence (ESV) and Ending Sexual Exploitation (ESE) campaigns. She collaborates closely with the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) team and Global Leads to advance the organization’s mission and impact in the region.
