Equality Now submitted an expert opinion to the Constitutional Court of Kyrgyzstan in connection with the case on the constitutionality of Articles 218 and 303 of the Labor Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as the Government Resolution ‘On the List of Industries, Jobs, Professions, and Positions with Harmful and/or Hazardous Working Conditions Where Women’s Labor is Prohibited,’ dated March 24, 2000, No. 158.
Equality Now sent the information to the Constitutional Court of the Kyrgyz Republic, analysing the international standards and practices in the field of gender equality in employment. It also provided an overview of how certain former USSR states have addressed the list of professions prohibited for women in Soviet legislation.

By amending or repealing Articles 218 and 303 of the Labour code in accordance with the listed international standards, Kyrgyzstan would not only be in compliance with its own Constitution but would also be in compliance with its international legal obligations, improving the lives of women and contributing to the achievement of the sustainable development goals of the country and the world.
