Elizabeth Alukudo

Elizabeth joined Equality Now in 2022. As an Associate Program Officer, Legal Equality at Equality Now’s Africa Office, she supports the SOAWR Coalition and its Secretariat (Equality Now) on key initiatives relating to the “All for Maputo Protocol Initiative” (AMPI). She has a Bachelor of Law Degree from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa and a Post Graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law.

Her proudest moment is being part of the amazing team that planned the 20th Anniversary of the Maputo Protocol celebrations.

Esther Waweru

Esther Waweru joined Equality Now in November 2017. For over a decade, she has advocated for human rights and social justice, engaging with both international and regional human rights bodies. She has advocated for women’s and girls’ rights and for other marginalized groups, including ethnic minorities, sexual and gender minorities and people with disabilities. Esther is a lawyer and previously worked in a private law firm, the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and the Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR). She holds a Master of Arts Degree in International Studies from the University of Nairobi, a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Moi University and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.

Esther aspires to see fully empowered girls and women living in a society that recognizes that their rights cannot be ignored or relegated to the back seat. Her favorite quote is : “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in your power to act.”

Mumbi Mugo

Mumbi is a Kenyan human rights lawyer with a decade of dedicated service in the field of women’s rights. With notable policy and legal advocacy expertise, Mumbi has been instrumental in championing the rights and empowerment of women and girls from the grassroots to the regional level. She has previously worked with the Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA Kenya), the Kenyan Section of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ Kenya), and most recently, HIVOS.

Mumbi holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Moi University and has undergone extensive training in human rights law, earning certifications from the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria, Curtin University, and the Coady Institute.

The COORDINATORS

Dr. Harrison Mbori

Dr. Harrison Mbori is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Luxembourg Centre for European Law (University of Luxembourg) and an Adjunct Lecturer at Kabarak University Law School. He holds an SJD (PhD) degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, and two Masters (LLMs) degrees from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and the Academy of International Economic Law and Policy (AIELPO), Greece. His current research interests are in the areas of international law generally and on the sub-regional international courts and tribunals in Africa specifically. He is also an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Dr. Mbori has a strong interest and passion in moot court training and competitions having participated in many moot courts as student, coach, and organizer.

Mishael M. Wambua

Mishael M. Wambua is a qualified Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, specializing in international economic law and policy with a focus on digital trade, tax-related aspects of international trade, and sustainability practices, particularly climate action. Mishael has extensive experience in international law, having advised and published on a wide range of topics within the field. He is an adjunct faculty member at Strathmore University-Law School in Nairobi, Kenya, where he supports research at the Strathmore Tax Research Centre (STRC) and contributes to various academic initiatives on an ad hoc basis. In addition to his elaborate professional experience, Mishael has extensive involvement in moot court competitions, having served as an organizer, coach, case author, judge and winner in multiple competitions.

Joy Awich

Joy Awich is a dedicated bilingual human rights lawyer with keen interests and experience in the protection and advancement of women’s rights, gender equality, human rights law, development, leadership, international law, the protection of the rule of law, democracy, policy-making and effective implementation. She possesses an LLB from Strathmore University and is currently pursuing a course in Public Policy Analysis at the London School of Economics (LSE).

In Kenya, she has conducted policy research for law reform with the Hon. Lady Chief Justice Martha Koome, Office of the Attorney General, relevant stakeholders and partners on laws governing; matrimonial property rights, sexual offences and domestic violence for the benefit of Kenyan women. Joy Awich has also conducted trainings for legal enforcers on effectively handling sexual gender-based violence cases while sourcing for landmark cases with the potential of creating strong jurisprudence in higher courts.

She has worked with the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Kenya), Equality Now, Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa, the East African Community, Africa Early Childhood Network and the United Nations Commissioner for Refugees (the UN Refugee Agency).
