Equality Now, the Arab Women Organization, the “My Mother is Jordanian” Campaign, and the Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights have jointly urged the Human Rights Committee to address harmful, discriminatory provisions in Jordan’s Penal Code and Nationality Law. Their submission highlights the urgent need to repeal Article 308, which exempts rapists from punishment if they marry their victims, and to end sex-based discrimination preventing Jordanian women from passing nationality to their children. The organisations call on Jordan to uphold its human rights obligations and ensure equality before the law.
The 35th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council took place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 6 to 23 June 2017.
Equality Now provided the following written statement for Agenda Item 3: Promotion and Protection of All Human Rights, including Civil, Political, Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, as well as the Right to Development.
