12 months ago, in our last annual Impact Report, I wrote of the threat posed by an increasingly challenging global political landscape. But also of the great strides made towards a more just and equal world. And the importance of persisting not in hope, but in expectation, born of an unshakeable belief in our purpose, and an unwavering, verifiable confidence in our approach.
2025 was an undeniably difficult, and at times dispiriting, year for all advocates of human rights and gender equality. But once again, together with our partners around the world, we kept pushing forward to help secure transformational changes to discriminatory laws that underpin the lived realities of women and girls everywhere. Thanks to these changes, tens of millions of women and girls have greater access to justice, moving us ever closer to equality in law, and therefore in life, for everyone.
But as we face up to the stark realities of the world today – to the forces that would slow, halt, and even reverse progress – we must acknowledge the fact that we cannot take such achievements for granted. As a movement, we must meet this moment – as we have been meeting moments for over 30 years – and position ourselves not only to defend, but to accelerate our impact. To adapt to, and where possible anticipate, the complex realities of a fast-changing world, and to have the ambition, courage, and capacity to help shape them.
It is with this in mind that we have developed our boldest strategic plan yet. Securing Rights Transforming Futures is a set of clear priorities and commitments that will shape our work for the next five years, as well as how we’re evolving to achieve maximum impact. Guided by this plan, we are rallying to the cause of upholding international law and human rights, and investing ourselves in strengthening the leaderful women’s movements that are so crucial for achieving change. And we are continuing to build the foundations of true equality everywhere, ensuring that all rights are upheld in laws, and legal processes are fit for purpose, in both the physical and rapidly evolving digital realms.
So, as you read this report, I invite you not only to reflect on the impact we have had over the past 12 months, or even 30 years, but to join me, my colleagues, our partners, and supporters in imagining what more we might achieve over the next five years and beyond.
And together, let’s make it happen!
