Collaborating for global change

Working in coalition

Those who are best placed to address gender inequality are often the people who it most profoundly affects and who understand and appreciate the cultural context in which it exists. We bring together a diverse community of women and partner organisations from around the world, amplifying their collective voices and generating collaborative, sustainable solutions.

In 2024, we collaborated for global change as a member of 38 coalitions, working alongside more than 3,000 organisations and individuals.

Regional coalitions

Africa

SOAWR (Solidarity for African Women’s Rights) – Africa

Founded in 2004, SOAWR is a Pan-African coalition of more than 70 organizations in over 30 countries advocating for the ratification, domestication, and implementation of the Maputo Protocol, Africa’s most comprehensive legal instrument for women’s rights. Equality Now played a central role in establishing SOAWR and currently serves as part of its Secretariat. Together, we train government officials, publish monitoring reports, and provide tools to help countries uphold their commitments. SOAWR’s advocacy has directly contributed to over 45 African Union Member States ratifying the Protocol and continues to serve as a model for rights-based coalition work.

Asia

SAMAJ (South Asian Movement for Accessing Justice)

SAMAJ is a regional coalition uniting legal practitioners, grassroots movements, and survivor networks across South Asia to address sexual violence and access to justice. With members from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, the coalition seeks to close the justice gap for survivors by pushing for stronger consent-based laws and systemic reform. Equality Now helped found and now coordinates SAMAJ, providing technical support, legal analysis, and international advocacy expertise. The coalition has submitted joint CEDAW reports, contributed to national legal reforms, and hosted the first regional feminist legal training on sexual violence implementation.

Europe and Central Asia

Eurasia Network to End Sexual Violence

This network brings together legal professionals, civil society organizations, and survivor advocates to address the persistent legal and social failures surrounding sexual violence across the Eurasia region. The coalition is focused on legal harmonization, consent-based reform, and closing impunity gaps. Equality Now coordinates the network and provides ongoing legal, communications, and advocacy training to its members. With strategic litigation efforts and shadow reports to UN treaty bodies, the coalition plays a key role in advancing international legal standards within national systems that often fall short.

Latin America and the Caribbean

Belém do Pará Coalition

The Belém do Pará Coalition was created to push for the effective implementation of the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment, and Eradication of Violence Against Women,  the first regional treaty to recognize gender-based violence as a human rights violation. Equality Now was a driving force behind the coalition’s creation and serves in a lead capacity. The coalition brings together feminist organizations and networks from across Latin America and the Caribbean to monitor progress, expose setbacks, and demand accountability from states. Notably, its work has contributed to increased articulation between feminist civil society and the Follow-up Mechanism to the Belém do Pará Convention (MESECVI), strengthening advocacy in multilateral spaces.

Middle East and North Africa

Hurra Coalition

Launched in 2023, the Hurra Coalition brings together feminist legal experts, survivor-led groups, and human rights defenders working to end discrimination in family law across the MENA region. The coalition focuses on harmonizing national legal systems with international human rights obligations, particularly in marriage, divorce, custody, and inheritance law. Equality Now helped convene and continues to serve as a core strategic member and Secretariat to  Hurra Coalition. The coalition also amplifies the lived experiences of women across the region, challenging deeply rooted patriarchal systems through legal reform, public education, and UN-level advocacy.

North America

ERA Coalition

The ERA Coalition works to advance the ratification and implementation of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. As a key partner, Equality Now brings a global human rights lens to the campaign, highlighting how constitutional equality aligns with international obligations.
