The Fund for Grassroots Activism to End FGM The Fund for Grassroots Activism to End FGM (FGM Fund) was established by Equality Now in 2000. Groups in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Conakry, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia/Somaliland, The Sudan and Tanzania have received grants to date. In June 2002, the Africa Regional Office convened the first meeting of FGM Fund grantees in Nairobi, Kenya, for the purpose of facilitating communication and the exchange of ideas among the grantees. The 2003 meeting of the FGM Fund grantees was held in Atlanta, Georgia, where the first known documented case of FGM in the United States was announced in April 2003. The 2004 meeting of the FGM Fund grantees was held in Nairobi, Kenya, and brought together nine ex-circumcisers from six African countries, the first international gathering of former circumcisers. In December 2002, Equality Now organized a Media Tour to highlight and honor the efforts of young activists in Ethiopia and Kenya working to stop the practice of FGM in their communities.
