During the last week of June 2006, Joss Whedon’s
fans, the Browncoats, organized 47 screenings of his film Serenity
in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United
States. The screenings were held to benefit Equality Now and celebrate
Joss’ birthday. Earnings totaling over $60,000 were reported
that first year.
This wonderful initiative has continued, and
grown, and since 2006 the Browncoats
have raised over $250,000 to help Equality Now in its work.
Equality Now is extremely grateful for the Browncoats’ support,
and is inspired by the tremendous energy and commitment of their
efforts as well as their thoughtful and eager embrace of our mission
to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around
the world.
