The worldwide movement for women’s rights continues to grow, and for Equality Now the year 2000 was a year of dramatic growth. The broadcast around the world by Oprah Winfrey of an hour-long show on state-sanctioned violence against women more than tripled the membership of Equality Now’s Women’s Action Network. At the end of 1999, the Network consisted of more than four thousand groups and individuals in more than one hundred countries around the world who take action in response to appeals on behalf of individual women, participate in campaigns on broader women’s issues, and channel information and strategy on their own concerns back through the Network.
