Registration

Registration for this year’s competition has now closed.

Eligibility

The Competition is open to students enrolled in a university located in an eligible country in Africa, and are currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in law. A team member must be a full-time or part-time student at one of the participating institutions during the calendar year of the competition. The tournament aims to involve teams from various African countries. English and French will be the official languages of the Competition, and each team is required to have two agents (representatives). Due to the considerable number of participating countries, only one team per country will typically be accepted, although exceptions may be made based on the total number of participating countries. A total of 32 teams will be selected to proceed to the preliminary rounds with 16 from Anglophone and 16 from Francophone. 16 teams will proceed to the semi finals and finals with 8 for the Anglophone and 8 for the Francophone components will be chosen, making a total of 16 participating teams.

Format

The Africa Gender Equality Moot Court Competition will adopt a hybrid format, incorporating both virtual and in-person rounds. The preliminary rounds and quarter-final rounds of the Competition shall be held virtually on Zoom while semi-finals, finals, and the award ceremony shall take place in person. Every participating team is required to submit written arguments, known as “memorials,” during the initial round of the Competition. If multiple teams from the same country submit memorials, only the highest-quality memorial will be chosen, with exceptions to this rule being if a limited number of countries submit memorials. The second round (orals round) comprises both preliminary and virtual rounds, conducted virtually, and semifinals and finals rounds, which are held in person. Initially, 16 teams will participate in the preliminary rounds, followed by eight teams in the virtual rounds and six and four teams in the semi-finals and finals, respectively.
