Global Lead, End Harmful Practices

Divya Srinivasan joined Equality Now in August 2017, and is now the Global Lead on Ending Harmful Practices, leading our work on ending harmful practices globally, with a focus on female genital mutilation and child marriage.

Originally from Chennai, India, Divya is currently based in Geneva. She is a human rights lawyer with a specialization in women’s and girls’ rights, gender equality, and international law.

At Equality Now, Divya’s work has included a focus on various issues affecting the human rights of women and girls, including sexual violence, anti-discrimination, female genital mutilation, and child, early, and forced marriage. Her work spans numerous countries, including work on campaigns to address sexual violence in India and South Asia, with a focus on marginalized communities; and to address female genital mutilation globally. Qualified for the bar in India, Divya holds a Master’s degree in law (with a concentration in international human rights) from Harvard Law School

Divya is inspired to advocate for women’s and girls’ rights based on the hope that she can bring about positive change in at least one person’s life. She believes that good laws are indispensable in the fight for gender equality and is inspired by the countless women all over the world who manage to succeed against impossible odds. Her favorite quote is by Mahatma Gandhi: “In a gentle way, you can shake the world.”

Outside the office, Divya enjoys watching sports, reading, and traveling.
