Telling stories, driving change: A toolkit for ethical gender-based violence cases documentation

Across the Middle East and North Africa, countless women and girls face multiple and intersecting forms of gendered violence. Whether through sexual violence, denial of access to justice, or exclusion from policy discussions, these experiences are too often ignored or normalized.

To effectively advocate for gender equality and justice, we must start by listening to victims and survivors and ethically and responsibly documenting their stories.

The “Ethical Guidelines for Documenting Testimonies of SGBV Survivors ” toolkit by Equality Now under the YW4A (Young Women for Awareness, Agency, Advocacy & Accountability) is a practical resource designed to guide young female activists, and civil society actors across the MENA region in conducting safe, respectful, and survivor-centered interviews to document cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

What’s in it?

This toolkit bridges the gap between documentation and advocacy, offering guidelines to ethically collect and share testimonies of SGBV survivors in ways that amplify voices, protect dignity, and influence systemic change.

It equips young activists and civil society actors with:

  • Step-by-step approaches to document SGBV ethically, sensitively, and with MENA- specific examples of advocacy campaigns on SGBV.
  • How to document and present case studies to influence public narratives, support legal advocacy, and mobilise social action.
  • How to ensure informed consent, digital safety, and survivor agency at every stage of the documentation process.

Who’s it for?

  • Young activists and advocates who drive community change.
  • Junior/beginner human rights defenders and legal practitioners working  on SGBV
  • Individuals engaged in citizen journalism who seek to ethically document and share testimonies of sexual and gender-based violence, especially in contexts where mainstream media is absent, biased, or unsafe.

Key takeaways and recommendations

The toolkit offers practical guidance on ethically documenting SGBV survivor testimonies, centering survivor agency, safety, and dignity throughout the process. It includes context-specific scenarios and risk mitigation strategies relevant to MENA-based young activists and advocates.

A key takeaway is the emphasis on informed consent, trauma-sensitive interviewing, and confidentiality protocols. The toolkit bridges documentation integrity and survivor-centered principles, providing tools to navigate ethical dilemmas in high-risk contexts. It reinforces the need for intersectional approaches and cautions against retraumatization, tokenism, or extractive storytelling.
