Africa
Judy Gitau is the Associate Director, East and Central Africa. Previously, she consulted with Equality Now Africa Office, specifically working on the domestication and implementation of African Union Instruments in Africa on the Rights of women. Judy has previously worked as a Technical Advisor on Transitional Justice for a Justice Sector Development Project in post-conflict Somaliland specializing in access to justice for victims of sexual and gender based violence. She has also worked as a Programme Officer with the Kenyan Section of the International Commission of Jurists managing projects that promoted accountability through prosecution of international crimes in Kenya and the Eastern Africa region (Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and Sudan).
Judy has been part of legal teams filing submissions to the ECOWAS court of justice, the African Committee of Experts on the rights and Welfare of the Child, and the African Court on Human and People’s Rights on girls’ right to education in Sierra Leone and Tanzania.
She is also a published author in the field of transitional justice and international criminal law, and is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a member of the Kenyan Chartered institute of Arbitrators.
Judy read Law at the University of Nairobi and mastered in International Human Rights Law at the University of Oxford.
